Do you tip window cleaners and Christmas light installers? What guides say
A short guide for homeowners near Ontario and Rancho Cucamonga who are wondering whether to tip after a window cleaning or a holiday light install, and how much.
Short answer: A tip is optional. Every guide we read treats it that way. Amounts are suggestions from the people who wrote them, not rules, and we do not set them.
For us, a tip is never expected, and our prices do not include one. A plan price is the whole price of the visit. If you want to tip anyway, the sections below show what sources suggest and how to do it.
What we found, and what we could not find
We read five pages that give real numbers: Emily Post, Care.com, Diane Gottsman's 2025 holiday guide, a Brick Underground advice column and a landscaping company's guide to tipping light installers. The big home-cost sites (Angi, HomeAdvisor) blocked our automated check, and a Thumbtack page we tried came back empty, so we cannot say what they recommend.
The sources are thin for window cleaners. We found no major etiquette guide that lists them. The one clear figure for window washing comes from a 2013 column about a New York high-rise. Light installers have one detailed guide, from a company that sells the service. Handymen are covered well. Treat everything below as a starting point, not a standard.
Suggested amounts by service
| Service | What the source suggests | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| Window cleaner | About 20 percent for a job done well. The writer applied it to a $156 job, about $31. | Brick Underground, May 29, 2013. A high-rise in New York City. |
| Holiday light installer, small single-story home | $20 to $40 for a small single-story home | Ware Landscaping guide, no author or date shown (page footer says 2026) |
| Holiday light installer, medium home with trees or shrubs | $50 to $75 for a medium-sized home | Ware Landscaping |
| Holiday light installer, large or complex display | $100 to $200 for a large or custom display | Ware Landscaping |
| Handyman | $15 to $40, cash or gift | Emily Post |
| Handyman | $25 to $50 for a handyman | Care.com, updated September 17, 2026 |
| Handyman, holiday tip | $20 to $100, if you use the service | Diane Gottsman, November 4, 2025 |
| Contractor | No tip | Care.com |
The Ware guide says most homeowners who tip usually offer $20 to $100 for lights. Our own light jobs are single-story rooflines (see our holiday light cost guide), which is the first row of that source.
Care.com says to think about your relationship with each person, how often you use them and your budget when deciding whether and how much to tip.
By situation
- A one-time visit that went well. Emily Post says that when in doubt you can ask the company what it accepts and what is typical.
- You already tip through the year. Emily Post says that if you tip at the time of service, you may forego an end-of-year tip or give a more modest holiday thank-you.
- The installer is the owner. The Ware guide lists this as one reason you can skip a tip. It also lists a service charge on the invoice, work that fell short, a premium package and a rushed or unfinished job.
- The job was hard. The Ware guide ties bigger tips to steep roofs, tall trees, second-story work, more installers and a more complex display. We do not hang lights on two-story rooflines, so this does not apply to our jobs.
- Good-service signs. The same guide lists on-time arrival, testing every bulb, hiding wires, cleaning up and fixing small problems for free.
- Money is tight. The Ware guide suggests a small treat such as coffee or cookies, and Diane Gottsman suggests a thoughtful note. Emily Post says to include a short handwritten note with any tip or gift.
Tipping when you are on a plan
Some of our window plans bring the same person back every few months. Our plan prices are the full price of each visit. A tip is not built in, and nobody on our side will ask for one.
Care.com says to weigh how often you use a provider when deciding whom to tip. Diane Gottsman says Thanksgiving or a December celebration is the right time for a holiday tip. Emily Post agrees that if you tip at every visit you may skip the year-end tip.
Our plans page lists what each plan costs.
How to give a tip
- Cash is the usual way. Emily Post lists "cash or gift" for a handyman. The Ware guide lists cash first for light installers.
- A gift card with a holiday card, or a treat such as coffee or cookies, are other options in the Ware guide.
- Text or app tips. We found no source that covers these. Ask the company if they accept one before you send it.
- A crew. The Ware guide says to split the tip among the installers or hand it to the team lead to share. If you split it yourself, give each person their share so it is clear.
- A note. Emily Post suggests a short handwritten note with a tip or gift.
- Not cash everywhere. Some employers do not allow tips. One source we read in search results said some window cleaning companies have this policy, but we did not open that page, so ask the company.
Holiday timing
Light installs run mid-November to mid-December, and takedown is in January. For a holiday tip, Diane Gottsman says Thanksgiving or a December celebration is the right time. If you plan to tip for the install, you can do it on the install day. If you also book a takedown, you could tip after that visit or once for both. The sources do not say which. The choice is yours.
The Ware guide lists neat removal and storage at the end of the season among the signs of good service. We do offer takedown and storage, and those are quoted as part of the job price.
When not to tip
- The work was not done well. The Ware guide lists this as a reason to skip.
- The invoice already includes a service charge.
- The company says it does not accept tips.
- You cannot afford it. According to Diane Gottsman, a kind note counts.
If the work is not right, tell the company so they can fix it. That helps more than a smaller tip.
Our side of it
We do not expect tips, and we do not ask. If you leave one, thank you. If you do not, nothing changes. Your price, your visit date and your plan stay the same.
If you want to do something for us other than tip, our neighbor program gives a neighbor $20 off a first visit and gives you a free next visit, up to $175, after they finish theirs.
